Preview of Livin’ Large

First off, I have to start by sharing a blog that I am just loving.  I learned about it when I asked you all to share your favorite blogs with me – So THANKS!  She does wonderful photography tutorials and I am busy learning as much as possible.  I take all my own photos for my books and patterns and am continually frustrated by the results that I get.  I usually have to take 400 photos to get a dozen goods ones.  I’ve even been thinking about switching cameras (from nikon to cannon), but then I read that Dee used the same camera that I have!!!!  There is hope – Yeah!  To read more, go to:  http://thepioneerwoman.com/

Now – back to business.  It’s an exciting day as the new book is here and I finally get to unveil what I’ve been working on for the last few months.   It’s been so hard not to share, as I continually want to ask all of you – would you pick version 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5? etc.  Sometimes I get myself into such a tizzy that I can’t think straight and don’t trust myself to pick out anything good!  But, I’m always afraid that if I share too soon, my pattern may end up in someone else’s book.  That still may happen, but at least this way, mine will come out first!  Anyways, I already gave you a sneak peak at the cover of the new book and explained my theme.  But just in case you missed it – The book is all about those great large-scale prints that are all the rage right now.  Some of them are so beautiful, it’s hard to cut them up!  That made this book a special challenge, as I didn’t want to loose the beauty of the fabric to the chopping block.  This one is my personal favorite, not only because I LOVE the fabric, but I love anything with a diamond shape and I think it’s a unique concept and layout.

Quilt Name:  Modern Day Diamonds, fabric line:  Garden Party by Anna Maria Horner

I had a few scraps leftover from this quilt and I thought they were too pretty to throw away.  I don’t usually save too many scraps as they just become too overwhelming.  In this case, it was totally worth it!

Quilt Name:  The Over-Under Table Runner

This is one of the size options for the cover quilt, Modern Day Diamonds.  The applique is optional.

Quilt Name:  Sweet ‘n’ Sassy Crib Quilt.  Fabric line:  Ava Rose by Tanya Whelan.  Mode:  my niece Addilyn.  I had to take advantage of the fact that she wasn’t mobile yet, thus she still makes a great model.  As of today, it would be a different story.

Quilt Name: Pretty in Pink.  Fabrics: by Heather Bailey from her Pop Garden and Bijouxl fabric lines for Free Spirit.  I like this quilt for many reasons – one being that it has no borders.  I have to admit that adding borders to large quilts is not my favorite thing to do.

Quilt name: Off-Kilter  Fabrics:  Cotton Blossom by Camille and Bonnie for Moda.  Don’t ya love that huge ric rac???

Quilt Name:   Sunday Picnic.  Fabrics:  The center is done with mostly Denyse Schmit fabrics and the outer border is by Amy Butler.  My mom pieced this quilt for me.  Can you believe that she got the pattern perfectly lined up in the corners ???

Quilt Name:  From the Heart.  Fabric:  1974 by Urban Chicks for Moda (I heart all of their fabrics)

Quilt name:  Touch of Class Table Cloth.  Fabrics by Amy Butler.  This pattern is perfect for that large scale floral that you just can’t cut.  Plus, everyone has a table that needs decorating!

Quilt name:  Square Dance, Fabric line:  Charisma by Chez Moi for Moda.  This pattern is well suited for fabric lines with large and medium scale prints. Can you guess where the larger scale prints go?

Quilt Name:  Kalidescope  Fabric Line:  Nest by Tula Pink for Moda

There are 11 projects in the book.  I tried to include a lot of variety so there is something for everyone – for the young and young at heart, for those that like wild and funky to those that like traditional, from super large-scale prints, to the smaller side of large scale prints.   Before I go any further, I have to confess something about this book.  It’s always a nerve wracking to put yourself and your designs out there.  In this case, it’s worse than normal because it is so different than what I usually do (in addition to the economy).  But, I am tired of the same old, same old and am looking for something fun and different.  I love all of the new fabrics and have been busy collecting them (something that isn’t already in my stash).  I am hoping that some of you are in the same boat and are looking for patterns to use these new fabrics in.  However, there is a whole segment of the quilting population that still loves the dark, country, etc fabrics.  I don’t want to eliminate that whole segment and try to make my living selling to a select few (although I did try to add some more traditional things, as I mentioned) . . . .  So, I’ve had quite a few say – “It’s really different” or “I just don’t decorate with that look.”  I understand – because much of my house isn’t in these colors or big prints either.  But, I am on a mission.  I am planning and scheming on how to redecorate my house.  (we just moved here 5 years ago and gutted the entire thing.  I’m thinking Joel may not think it’s necessary to redecorate.  The problem is he may notice if I start doing it!  It’s not like I’m just coming home with a new haircut that he won’t notice . . .)  I would like some help from all of you – I’d love to see some photos of what you have been doing with large scale prints and how you have been using them in your home.  You can send them to me at hmulder@wecnet.com.   I’m always looking for new inspiration!

I’m curious to hear your feedback and am always willing to swap ideas for free books or patterns.  So, please leave me a comment or e-mail me photo of your ideas, and you will be eligable to win a yourself a copy of the book.  As far as comments go, I would like to hear which pattern in the new books is your favorite.  I’m curious to see which look you like best!

Thanks again for all your help – Heather

They are all so amazing! I love your colors. I think the over under table runner the best.

  2. Paula says:

These quilts aren’t my decorating style, but who says a quilt HAS to match your decorating style? I would use them to cuddle on the couch. They are happy quilts. I think anyone who has been quilting for a while will find themselves loving quilts, fabrics and patterns outside their comfort zone. Lovely quilts. You did an amazing job on them.

  3. calegar says:

Oh this is awesome! Your quilts are wonderful and all my favorite fabircs! WOW.

  4. Jackie says:

Wow, Wow, Wow!! I absolutely love what you have been working on … Stunning!! I really like them all, but if I had to pick, I think I would pick the Table runner, table topper , and Modern Day Diamonds. Okay, so I couldn’t pick just one. As far as decorating ideas, I definitely think quilts are the way to go. I have them every where. On the walls, beds, railings, furniture. I think they just cheer up a place. But I think you need to keep everything else simple. For what it is worth, that is my 2 cents, I hope it helps. Have a great day!

  5. Christy says:

Wow! I love all of the patterns.. My favorite is Kaleidoscope, Over under table runner and Modern day diamonds. I am not sure if it is because I have all of those fabric lines, but I love them. I would like to make the Over under table runner for a baby quilt. I think it would look great. I can’t wait to get the book. When will it be released? And, where can we purchase it. Thanks for all of the great designs.

  6. Cindy Lammon says:

Wow! (I guess you’re getting a lot of those). Every single quilt is beautiful and really showcases the large scale prints. Can’t wait to get the book!

  7. cindratee says:

I knew you would love Pioneer Woman. There is a little bit of everything there.

  8. mariajhmom says:

I’ll take one of each, please. Does my house have to be clean before I can go sew???

  9. Heather says:

Pioneer Woman is the BEST isn’t she? I love her website, and have learned a lot from her photoshop tutorials, my photos look way better now, and I hope you can learn from them too, it makes life so much better.

So, I was scrolling through your photos and I am in love with every single one of these quilts. I don’t decorate with these colors, but who cares? I think I’d buy all of those fabrics and make the quilts anyways… I have bought a few already. The bigger blocks are nice, they are easier to piece and it goes quicker (I would think). I am totally buying this book when it comes out, it’s awesome.

By the way, I help teach a quilt class at our church, and we used one of your tablerunner patterns for it, everybody loved it, and it taught several beginners how to sew, they are requesting more! 🙂 Okay I am done writing this novel now LOL!

  10. Tricia says:

Oh wow, I am so in love. I simply can not pick a favorite. I have narrowed it down to two though, Pretty in Pink and Off Kilter. Oh how I love the brown in Off Kilter and I love the lattice looking white in Pretty in Pink.

  11. Well, I LOVE them all, do I have to choose? I guess Modern Day Diamonds, but it is a real toss up. When can we find it in quilt shops?

  12. Leah says:

Ok the over under runner is my FAVORITE!!! I would buy the book simply for that one pattern. I love the look you gave it with the vibrant colors! I also like how the patterns don’t seem to ‘scare’ me. I still think of myself as a beginner and if the patterns look ‘scary’ I simply don’t even buy!
    Great job HEATHER!!!!

  13. annie says:

Oh here we go again….LOVE Pretty in Pink ( must do) and Sunday Picnic. I am like you in that I haven’t decorated my home in LARGE prints, but it certainly IS the trend. My daughter has never shown much interest in quilting UNTIL she saw Amy Butler….now she can’t wait to make another quilt. I have to have your book….hope I win a copy!!!! XXX Annie

  14. Angela says:

WOW!!!! I just found your blog and love it. I love these quilts and want to make them all! I think my favorites are Pretty in Pink and Square Dance… they are all so great! Can’t wait to get my hands on this book! Will you be at Quilt Market in Houston?

  15. Jennifer says:

Love everything I see and want the book asap! How can we get a copy and when will it be available?

  16. Debbie says:

I can’t wait to get this book. This fall? or do we have to wait longer? ooo Will it be out at Quilt Market for us normal folks? Just keep us posted.

  17. Kathy says:

Heather, I, too, love the country look, but I do get tired of sewing with the same colors and types of prints. When I saw Charisma, I knew I had to have it…and then I saw the pattern you made using that line…just knocked my socks off! I’ll still decorate country, but I’ll always make quilts just because I LIKE the pattern or the fabric or the colors. NOT just to match my decor. My husband often commented that all my quilts for a time were ‘dark’. Well, now they won’t be!
Thanks…and keep on inspiring us to CHANGE…break out and HAVE FUN!

  18. Stephanie says:

You hit Grand Slam with your projects. I love Amy Butler anything and I LOVE the 1974 fabrics. My favorite projects are Off Kilter and the Amy Butler table topper because I love her lotus line and the huge prints. You have a great style and trying something new is always fun. Boy did I use “love” a lot. Can’t wait to get my hands on your new book.

  19. Mary on Lake Pulaski says:

Both Off Kilter and Square Dance are awesome. To me quilting is what I like at the time, not decorating in a theme for your home (or someone elses) so I can try all the new and exciting patterns and fabrics.
Keep on stepping out of your box, each one is wonderful in its own way.

  20. Stefanie says:

Oh, I don’t think that I could choose which one I like the best because I would make all of them! Your color choices and use of embellishments really highlight the patterns. I especially love the GIANT ric rac!

  21. Kathie says:

You are just amazing!!! This book is now on my wish list for Christmas……..will it be ready????Modern Day Diamond is STRIKING!!Over Under Table Runner is a great way to use up scraps and beautiful to boot!! Sweet & Sassy is just adorable (along with baby!) Off Kilter really is soooo showy!! Sunday Picnics……LOVE IT!!(mom did great)Squar Dance would look just right on my bed. SO I CAN’T PICK JUST ONE . I’m so excited to have a use for all these beautiful large print fabrics out right now and you’ve done a great job doing just that. Kathie

  22. Mary Ann Dove says:

I used to be one of the dark Thimbleberries people but quilting with my granddaughter, now age 11, has completely changed my color palate. Anything goes, and I like brights too. I love the Sunday Picnic, wonder what it would look like in reds and blacks/whites. Also know my granddaughter and I could get into Pretty in Pink. We both like your books and we both knit too.

  23. Ferne says:

So many patterns here that I would love to try. I’ll be looking for this book for sure. I am really loving the over under runner, I love little details that make things interesting.

  24. Alison says:

These projects are stunning. As I went down the page, I kept thinking I loved the next one more!
I love the over/under table runner. I think Square Dance shows off the large prints well. Mind you, they all do.
The thing is – fashions do change. I have had a tough time picking a pattern for a challenge with a really bright chocolate and intense brights piece of fabric. However when my teenage daughter saw it, she loved it.
If we want to get the next generation interested in fabrics, sewing and quilting, we must look to current trends.
Well done. I can’t wait for the book

  25. Bev says:

Wonderful book! I can’t wait for it! What is the name of it??

  26. Christine says:

I have always been a fan of yours, but you have outdone yourself with this new book. I can’t wait to get the new book and start sewing!!!!! you inspire me!! Great job!!!

  27. Shannon says:

I love “The Over-Under Table Runner” but I think my favorite would have to be “From the Heart.” Just beautiful! I can’t wait to get the book. The patterns are wonderful and you picked amazing fabrics! Great job!

  28. Teresa says:

    Heather,
I have been a huge fan of your designs from the beginning. Myself and another co-worker use your Pickety Sticks pattern for many of the charity quilts we make. As well as my 14 year old daughter recently made this quilt too. Keep up the FRESH designs.
    Teresa

  29. Jane Weston says:

What great photography…I think you are doing a fine job…that picture of the Kaleidoscope quilt hanging over the water is fantastic…how did you manage to set that one up without dropping the quilt into the water?! …and as for the debate between a Nikon and a Canon…well you could be there forever…in the photography field it seems to be the debate on everyones lips. I’ve been shopping around for an SLR and I keep flipping between the two!
There are so many good photography websites and certainly Pioneer Woman is one of the best…she really tells it straight and her pictures are breath taking. I’ve only been following her blogs for a short while, but I’m always inspired. If you are interested in a few moregood site to visit, please let me know… I have learnt sooo much about picture taking etc. thanks to the expertise online.
Your quilts are gorgeous! I love the Over-Under table runner…that one has definitely caught my eye. Good luck with your book…I’m sure it will be a huge success.

  30. Kristina says:

Honestly Heather, I LOVE every single pattern! Usually when you look at a book there are a few that catch your eye, but I seriously want to make EVERY SINGLE quilt in this book! Can’t wait to see it in person—nice job, really!

  31. polly says:

I love pretty in pink and from the heart. Can I tell you how much I want to make them…Now since you showed us this can you please tell me when I can buy the book…I need it now:) I only have one week of my algebra class and I can sew my little heart out:)

  32. Linda in NC says:

My faves are Square Dance and Kalidescope. Okay – straight to the fabric shop I go to get me some large scale prints! (Love that giant rick-rack!)

Looking at your quilts always raises my spirits; they’re just so happy, ya know?

  33. Julia says:

    Hi again,
congrats (again ;o)) to your new book…from what you’ve showed I think it’s just stunning…!
My favourite quilt is (still) ‘Pretty in Pink’ – I fell in love with that quilt ;o).
Until you shared the content of your new book I’ve never really thought about big prints…they were…just too pretty to cut up so I didn’t really consider them to incorporate in my quilt designs other than borders…and as I think this is quite boring, I didn’t use them often…but now you got me re-think this big-print-stuff and I’m so inspired just at looking at your “simple” but nonetheless GORGEOUS design of big print quilts.
Thanks for sharing those pictures with us!
    Julia

  34. Rachelle says:

I love all of the quilts in this book. I especially love Square Dance and the Over Under Runner. I checked out Pioneerlady’s blog and love it also.

  35. Carrie P. says:

You know I have always hesitated buying big prints because I just did not know how to use them. I love your quilts especially “Touch of Class”, “Pretty In Pink”, and “Off Kilter.”
The rick rack is perfect on that quilt.

  36. Melissa says:

    Hi Heather,
Love the new book, you will have an order in your box as soon as I am done with this post. I love that you have done the work of making the quilts in the “new, fun fabrics” now I can have the sample gals make them in traditional (which they like) and we will have 2 ways to market the book! As always you are keeping everything fresh and new!

  37. TerryG says:

The quilts are beautiful! I love Modern Day Diamonds, The Over-Under Table Runner, Pretty in Pink, and Square Dance.
I love all of the new bright fabrics. I have 2 small children at home and I’ve noticed that I’ve been decorating with browns lately just to hide dirt and to give my eyes a rest from the clutter of toys. I think a bright quilt here and there would be nice to keep my place from looking too dreary.
I can’t wait for this book to come out.

  38. Julianna says:

This is so brilliant! If I had to try and narrow it down to the quilts I would want to make first (with all others to follow!) they would be pretty in pink, klaidescope and square dance.

I confess to being overwhelmed with the bigger patterns coming out, despite loving them all so this is fabulous to look forward to.

You have such talent. I look forward to the book.

  39. diane says:

Wow Heather, I’m being honest here, I really want the book! I don’t ever buy quilting books, BUT I’m loving your patterns in Livin’ Large. My favorite(s) Pretty in Pink, A Touch of Class and Square Dance. I really like the fabrics on all of them! Pretty in Pink is so lovely in the Charm Fabrics also. This will be a great seller. No qualms about that, put your mind to rest! Question for you: which pattern do you think sewed up the quickest??? Thank you for a great book! Serious.

  40. Priscilla says:

wow!, they are all fantastic! My favourite though is the off kilter – I think that one appeals to me the most – and I fancy that ric-rak too!

    Congrats on the new book!

  41. Ellen says:

What a great book! You have such unique designs. I like From the Heart because it is perfect to give to someone who may be suffering from cancer, or who has lost a loved one. For myself, I adore Touch of Class Tablecloth. Really, really neat piece!

  42. Lisa says:

You never fail to inspire me!!! I want to try so many!! I too hate to cut up some of these beautiful new big prints. I’m going to try Pretty in Pink and the Off Kilter Fabric quilt. Also the touch of class tablecloth and the over-under table runner. Oh heck…I want to ALL of them. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing with us!!!! You really are the first blog I check. Thanks!

  43. Tyra Rammell says:

Dear Heather, I love the quilts but frankly Addilyn stole the show! What a doll. I am a new grandma and would love to make the baby quilt for my sweet star. You are so talented. Thanks for inspiring so many.

  44. shelley says:

It’s very hard to choose just one as my favorite! I have to ask myself though, is it the fabric and colors I like the most, or the beautiful setting, or your pretty little niece, that is swaying my decision? If I look at the design and think of what I may have in my stash …. I would choose “Pretty in Pink”. I like the little extra touch of the applique and could see myself make one of these. The “Sweet n Sassy Crib Quilt” runs a very close second! Again the applique, but also the diamond setting is very striking! Thanks for letting us see what is inside your new book!

  45. Sinta says:

Boy where did the week go! Look at how busy you have been. These are great quilts and fun fabrics! I was checking in to see who the winners are this week… but since they are not posted yet I thought I would tell you my favorites:) Sweet & Sassy is adorable and I loved the touch of Class table cloth… simple yet a good oportunity to show off a large print. Good job Heather!!!

  46. Claudia says:

I like off-kilter, but I also like the others. I love how fast and easy your patterns go together. Keep the great work.

  47. Cathy says:

I’m very impressed with the quilt designs in your new book. These larger “pop prints” aren’t usually my thing but I have a teen daughter who likes them and would like a new quilt for her bedroom and your blog entry has given me a few ideas. I especially like Pretty In Pink and Kalidascope and can see doing the woven-look table runner in more traditional fabrics. I’ll have to buy your book as soon as it is out. Thanks!

  48. Camille says:

You never cease to amaze me. I love every single quilt in this book. Seriously, EVERY single one! I think this is your best book yet, but I pretty sure I think that about every one.

I know exactly what you mean about hard it is to put yourself out there, and try something different (not to mention the economy!) but I really think you hit a home run on this one. It is going to do GREAT. Speaking of which, when can get get our hands on a copy? 🙂

  49. Jolene says:

Wow!! The quilts are all absolutely beautiful! I really can’t narrow down to one, but really like ‘Off Kilter’, ‘Kaleidascope’, and ‘Square Dance’. I like how ‘Sunday Picnic’ is very sharp looking not only in color, but also the design, sort of the same with ‘Modern Day Diamonds’. I really like them all, can you tell!?

  50. Laura says:

I love your new book and quilts and can hardly wait to see it in print! I really like the idea of the ric rac for the stems (as I’m not into applique) of the flowers in Pretty in Pink. I’m going to be on the look out for ric rac as I think it has many uses! I also like the different sizes and quilts for your modern day diamonds and don’t you just love Anna Maria Horner’s fabrics! I also love Pioneer Woman ~ she is amazing!!

    Laura

  51. dee says:

I love all the table runners – but my number one pick is Pretty in Pink – love the way they showcase the fabrics, yet the flowers are a wonderful touch of whimsy. Dee

  52. Gigi says:

HELLO, YOUR SITE IS AWESOME AND GIVES ME HOPE FOR THE QUILTING I DO. SINCE BECOMING DISABLED I QUILT WHEN I CAN BE UP AND LOVE QUICK ,EASY QUILTS THAT LOOK MORE COMPLICATED. YOUR’S ARE A MUST-HAVE. I HAVE DONATED OVER 50 QUILTS AND CAN DO MORE WITH YOUR QUICK PATTERNS – IF I CAN AFFORD MORE FABRIC-MY FAVORITE IS KALIDESCOPE AND THE TABLECLOTH. WHAT ARE THE QUILTS SHOWN OVER THE WALL? BLESSINGS, GIGI.

  53. scrappylady says:

    Hi Heather,
I just LOVE the Pretty in Pink and Off-Kilter patterns! ( And your choice in fabrics!!!) I will be watching for their release. I already have several of your patterns and books, and love adding to my collection! You do beautiful work! Thanks for sharing. I just found your blog so now I can stay better informed of your new projects. ( I’m also LOVING all the fun ric rac out there now!) You’re one talented lady! I’ll keep coming back for more! Wendy 🙂

  54. These quilts are so much fun! Are you planning to head to Quilt Market next week? If so, email me — I have a question for you.

  55. tbusby says:

They all intrigue me but top 2 are: Kalidescope Fabric Line: Nest by Tula Pink for Moda and Modern Day Diamonds. Can’t wait for the book. Have you set a release date for Livin Large?

  56. Carol Lewis says:

I love the projects in this book. I have a Charisma fat quarter pack and now that I see the Square Dance quilt made with this fabric line I think that is the perfect pattern for my fabric, thanks. I also love the hour glass quilt made with the 1974 fabrics.

  57. Laura says:

LOVE IT…LOVE IT…LOVE IT…I can’t say it enough…LOVE IT…i do have to admit that I am a huge fan of your patterns anyway but these new ones are fabulous! I am going to forward your blog right now to my boss so we can get these in our shop! LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT…

  58. Lucy says:

Just a few more encouraging words for you Heather. I just bought a Symphony (Moda) Layer Cake yesterday and was specifically looking for a large pattern to feature the fabulous fabrics. I remembered seeing this post with pics of Square Dance so I came back for a second look. Bingo — I think it is the perfect pattern for this fabric line.

I have so many projects on my plate right now and the 2 biggest are your patterns. The traditional — the new. Eg., I’m also making a King Size Scrappy Stars using Hemming House and a few Portabella added in. When I shared the King Size plan with my blog friends they went ape over your Anka’s Treasure book and bought it.

Your patterns and fabric choices are so inspirational. Thanks for sharing your personal journey — and the pics of your work. This is the best marketing you can do – IMO.

  59. jo says:

I absolutely love the new book. I have seen all those big prints in the stores and wondered what on earth you’d make with them that wouldn’t be over board LOUD. You answered the call…your designs are perfect. I asked our local quilt shop if she’d order a book for me and she is!!

I applaud you for “stepping out of the box” with a different style. Do what you love or what inspires you and you will be contagious.

  60. Linda Holm says:

I still love your patterns. My favorites in this book are Sunday picnic, pretty in pink, & square dance. But don’t totally forget about the little bit of applique you put on your “old” quilt designs, I love the applique!!!!!!!!!!!! And I still love all the old books & patterns. I’m still trying to make them all!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a new quilter and I made Pretty in Pink as my second quilt ever! I am also making Off Kilter and plan on doing Kalidescope soon! You are the reason I have continued quilting! Your quilt designs are amazing. I wish you could come to my local quilt shop and sign my book and give a demo or something. I am just in love with your quilts!

  63. Maria M says:

Wow, I love all the patterns! I’m really digging the over-under table runner – I’d love to use up my scraps that way. But I love the choice of fabrics in each quilt pictured. I’ll definitely have to put the book on my list to get

These are wonderful patterns in wonderful colors, and my favorite is over under table runner. This was a very good idea, as the fabrics coming out now are so stunning it is a shame to cut them up too much. No worries about changing from tradition – you have done it perfectly.

Perfect timing! I’ve fallen in love with what I call the “modern” fabric designs and colors, and have been collecting some. But what to do? I love the patterns you’ve designed, so, perfect timing! My favorites are Square Dance and Pretty in Pink. Happiest wishes for huge success!

  70. Julie says:

  73. Square Dance is my favorite. I’m trying to find this book online and have not been able to. Do you sell it directly?
