Today is Friday the 13th! It seems appropriate that today is the day that I am the featured designer on the Blog Hop because Friday the 13th is the day I ran away with this guy and got married!
It sure makes our anniversary easy to remember! Don’t worry, I don’t think reading this blog post will bring you the bad Friday the 13th luck . . .
Just in case we haven’t met before, I’m Heather. My husband Joel and I live near Spicer, MN where we run our business out of our home. You can read a little more about us and our business here. I started my business 14 years ago and have since published over 20 books, lots of single patterns and designed over a dozen fabric lines. You can see more of my work here (it’s my favorite part of my website) I love to take traditional elements of quilting and put a trendy spin to them – that’s why I call my blog Trends and Traditions. Speaking of trends, one of my favorites is precuts and I’ve designed many books and patterns for them. So, if you have a Jelly Roll, Layer Cake, Charm Pack, etc that you have been looking for a pattern to go with, I just might have a project for you! My newest book is a table runner book, filled with quick projects that you can finish in an evening or weekend.
My next fabric line is Wildflowers and will be arriving in stores next month. I would describe it as bright, fresh and playful, with a modern feel.
My project for you today is this little wool penny mat:
If you haven’t tried a wool penny mat before, they are so fun! They are small enough to tuck in your purse, work on in the car, or have in your lap while watching TV. I also like that you don’t have to worry about quilting or binding them. A simple blanket stitch around the outside edge finishes everything off! You only need to know how to do three simple hand stitches to be able to make this project. If you don’t know how to hand embroidery, I give pictures in the pattern to help you along. All you need to do is print yourself off a copy and get started collecting some wools!
Just click on the text below:
Our theme for today is a Santa story. Here I am in 1980 sitting on Santa’s lap (my Aunt Lynn, also known as the oracle if you read the previous blog hop posts).

Don’t you love the foil wallpaper in the background? I’m not sure if I usually came to Christmas dressed in my pajamas, but my little brother is too:
He doesn’t seem to like Santa quite as much as I do. He’s only two here, so I guess the love for Santa comes later! Every year we would hear some thumping on the roof at Grandma’s, followed by a loud “HO, HO, HO” at the back door. I also remember that one year Santa had black eyebrows. I later realized that one of my uncles was filling in for Aunt Lynn as Santa. We didn’t seem to care, as long as Santa showed up.
As a thank-you for visiting my blog today, I am going to have a giveaway. I will be giving away copies of my newest books!

Just leave me a comment to enter. Then continue on the hop to see what the other designers are sharing today!

Thanks for the really love penny mat!! I would love to win one of your great books.

Thank you for the penny mat directions. I made the table topper from the Sizzlin’ Sixties book as a sampler topper for the shop I work in and used four different hexagons to show what was available in your book. I am going to try to get the corporate buyer to order your other books, and I hope we will be getting your new line of fabric.

Thank you for the Christmas penny mat pattern. I hope to have time at work on Saturday to pull some wool to make the mat. Love your designs, especially the On the Run. Will have to keep an eye out for Wildflowers.
I wonder if our kids will look back at our decorating with as much surprise as we do our parents’ houses? That wall paper was a bit over the top – are you sure someone didn’t wrap a wall?

My favorite memories of Christmas was Santa coming to my grandmother’s house on a firetruck. He would knock on her door and sit and talk with us. Best of all…he would give us a bag of candy!

Heather- I am just finishing up the Kaleidoscope quilt from Living Large, and I have to say it has been a super fun (and easy) quilt to put together. I am sending the tops (I made matching ones for my girls’ beds) off to my mom to quilt on her long arm, and will email you pics when they are finished.
Anyone reading this should know that Heather has great patterns with thorough directions!
If I win I’ll give the two books in the group that I already have to a friend who just started quilting, and keep the others to to get busy with!
Thanks for all your great patterns and inspiration!

I actually have one that I made that took years to finish but I had it out on my table that got cleared off for my husband’s & my 25th Anniversary. Since then it is hung over a chair in the kitchen & gives the room some color. So I think I may have to try some of yours.

For our daughter’s first Christmas eve, my husband dressed as Santa Claus – beard and all. She was only 3 months old and I thought she would be scared. I gave her to him and she promptly snuggled into his beard and feel sound asleep. He dressed up again Christmas Day so we could take some pictures. with her eyes open. So cute! P.S. Love the penny mat pattern. I enjoy working with wool as I love the feel of it. Kinda roughly soft. Know what I mean?

Thanks for the penny mat pattern. They are a joy to make.
Also your Santa story is too funny and reminds me of when our neighbour used to come over Christmas Eve and do the Ho! Ho! until the year we had a dog. Santa scared the heck out of the dog and it was funny to see Santa go high tailing it next door. The kids were worried all night that Santa was mad and not coming back.

I think two is the year of dislike of Santa, or as he’s refered to at out house Tea-Tah. My oldest wouldn’t take a pictgure with him last year. We tried three times, and finally ended up with daddy and I in jeans next to santa with her clinging to daddy and santa looking sad. I would have sat in his lap had I not been so self councious about my weight, even though I was only like 2 months pregnant….oh well.

H-eather’s fabrics and patterns must be a little sharing of herself; she
E-van has Joel, Deb, and probably Daisy for support; not to mention
A-nka, her personal inspiration; then there are
T-rends and traditions, tutorials and travels which are all truly treasures; don’t you agree
H-er fabric lines are to die for, and the fact that she is
E-ntertaining the idea of being a photographer doesn’t appear to be too shabby either; and have you noticed how
R-oll seems to be a pattern name theme, hmmm, perhaps that leans to her love of precuts!

Thanks, Heather, for the penny mat design. I’ve done a lot of dyeing and playing with wool (mostly with my doll making), but I’ve never made a penny mat or penny rug. This one is so charming and small enough that I’m willing to tackle it without fear that I’m just adding one more project that is doomed to stay unfinishished in the bottom of a box. I have one or six or twenty of those, where I tried something new and lost interest. I tend to want to go big. My first quilt was a baby quilt for my first niece, but my second one was a queen/king sized “chevron,” basically a log cabin starting in the corner instead of the center. My third quilt was also king-sized. A garden twist quilt. But was I satisfied to do it with two colors. No, I had to use four. Good thing I ended up liking quilting because at least some of those get finished! I still bite off (buy, that is) more than I can ever chew in a lifetime, but it sure is fun planning all of those quilts.
Thanks you and the rest of the hop gang for doing this for us. You deserve a lot more than you’re getting out of it!!
