The Classic Clutch

Hi Everyone –

I’m just finishing up the very last of the market preparations.  I’m putting the binding on the last quilt and I am packing my suitcase.  Luckily that last quilt is just a runner, so it should be done shortly.

The pattern is from the Living Large 2 book that I just previewed and the fabric is another sneak peek at Whimsy.  For any shop owners reading this, the line will preview at market.  You can swing by my booth to see lots of quilts done with the line or to see a Henry Glass rep about ordering.  For the rest of you, I will keep you posted on when it arrives in shops – probably the end of June.

Before I forget, the winners of the Living Large 2 book from the last two posts are:

Jenny Michael and Sandi ~ Call me Crazy.  Please e-mail your shipping addresses to: hmulder@wecnet.com

I have one last preview that I want to get in before I leave for market.  It’s called The Classic Clutch.

I started thinking about clutches in the first place because I was having issues with my large purse.  I use a really large purse because I always want to have a hand-work or knitting project with me at ALL times.  This is how large my purse is –

The problem with having this large of a purse is sometimes I just don’t feel like dragging it with on every errand.  When I am just running into a store for a gallon or milk or a quick trip into the post office, I don’t need the whole thing with me.  I wanted a smaller purse that would fit inside my big purse, that would just hold the necessities.  That way I could grab just that when I ran into the store.

The first little purse I tried was one of these wallets:

There are everywhere in the stores.  I know many people who have them, so they must be popular.  I didn’t last long with this one, as the clasp never stayed shut.  I decided I needed to make my own because I needed it to be slightly larger – with handles, pockets, and personalized with a cute-large scale fabric.  Something practical, yet cute.  After lots of demos, here is what I’ve come up with:

Inside is a divider that holds the cards I use on a regular basis.  Behind the divider, you can store some cash (not shown).  There is also room for a checkbook and lipstick.  The back pocket holds your keys and cell phone.

I also made a larger size.  I put longer handles on this one so I can throw it over my shoulders for hands-free shopping.  This one still fits inside my regular purse, so I can pull it out for those quick trips.  I will also use this one for an all day shopping trip, as that large purse causes my shoulders to get sore if I use it for a full day.  By the way, you can make both size handles and just switch them out as needed.  I found the little clips at the hardware store for $1.50, so it’s quite inexpensive to make both.

The view from the back side shows the optional zipper pocket (for your cell phone or whatever).  I love the way the zipper cuts through this large print.  By the way, don’t be scared of the zipper.  It’s SO much easier than you think!

(Please excuse the questionable photos.  Joel and I had a good laugh over him trying to be a purse photographer and me trying to be a model!)

Mom and I have made up several color options so far, including another one using fabrics by Valori Wells (the last two were her fabrics as well).

I made this one to match the afore mentioned purse, using my Artful Home fabric.

I also thought I needed a basic black one.  (This is an early demo model, so a few things have been tweaked, including how to reduce the wear-and-tear shown in the area over the magnetic clasp.)

The construction is quick and easy, so they will go together in an evening.  They also make perfect gifts for girlfriends and family members.  The instructions are detailed and full of photos, so that also helps with the construction.  I have struggled in the past with instructions for things other than quilts, so I knew I wanted to include really detailed instructions.  When I look at a quilt, I can often see how it is put together.  When I look at a purse, I have no idea where to begin.  Many patterns just describe how to put the item together, but text can be interpreted in so many ways.  Having photo instructions leaves a lot less room for questions, and hopefully, a more successful outcome.

The patterns started shipping last week, so they should be out and about.  In the meantime, we will continue the tradition and give away a copy to one of the commenters.  I’ll announce the winner after quilt market.

Boy, do I need that pattern!!! I also carry a huge bag, after all, we never know when we will need some stitching, or a book, or eye drops, or lip balm, or even a small screw driver…I mean, why doesn’t my hubby understand this??? Anyway, like you I don’t like to take ALL of my life’s necessities to run for a gallon of milk or say, for a sandwich and a drink, right? Or even to the LQS to wander for a bit. This would be perfect, I really love the fact that you can change out the handle to either size. Thanks for a chance!

  2. Bonnie Novak says:

You can never have too many purses!! I love the size!!Thanks for a great pattern.

  3. DianeY says:

I could use one of those cute bags! I, too, use a big bag & have been known to overbulge my pockets when I’m on the errand runs

  4. Bec Clarke says:

Wow that is the cutest clutch. If I don’t win a pattern I may have to buy one.

  5. Gerda Vantuil says:

Wow! Heather, I too, usually carry a larger purse, except in winter when I can tuck my wallet in my coat’s big pockets. I ‘ve been thinking I need a smaller purse and this clutch looks perfect! Hope I’m a winner, and I hope, too, you have lots of fun at Market. Thanks for your fun posts, too, I really enjoy them.

  6. DianeH says:

Great bag! I have a giant tote full of stuff and then just take my wallet in the shops with me but I need an in between size and this would be fantastic. Love the runner – best wishes for the show.

  7. Amy Rochelle says:

The pattern seems just like the kind of purse/wallet I’ve been looking for. The size is such that it can also fit nicely into a larger purse/bag when the situation calls for a bigger bag. No need to move things about – just grab and go either option~ Have a great time at Market!

  8. Sharon Dimberg says:

Way to cute! It is the perfect size for doing some quick errands. Can’t wait for the pattern to be in the local quilt stores.

  9. Patty says:

Love the Clutch in both sizes. Would be so useful when flying and you can only bring one carry-on or personal item… I often bring a tote and throw a smaller bag/purse inside. I am anxious to see the new Living Large 2 and your Classic Clutch patterns. You are amazing …. continually coming up with new ideas!! Have fun at Market!!

  10. Zina says:

  12. Cathy McMann says:

Very clever! I carry a large purse, too, and like the idea of a smaller one lurking inside for those times when I don’t need everything with me. By the way, I like the lime green sweater on the model (you?) near the end; it looks like one of your creations too.

  13. Patty B. says:

  21. Cyndie Salvatore says:

Love the clutch, I have been thinking of a way to protect and carry my I Touch or small video camera and I think this could have a pocket on the inside to snuggle that item as well. Might as well use my scraps instead of buying a carrying case. Will be looking for the pattern.

  22. Shelly J says:

I am loving the table runner and clutch purse patterns. You have out done yourself again. Both would make excellent gifts. Enjoy Quilt Market.

  23. Megan Z. says:

This is a great idea! I carry a big purse, too and I love the idea of having a smaller one that I can use as is or in my big purse if I need to. I have tried to make bags in the past and they are really difficult without pictures. I’m excited to make this … such a great idea!

  25. SusanC says:

Love that! My daughter was just worrying about how she would balance a purse, a diaper bag and twin babies after they are born in September. This would be perfect for her to keep “her stuff” separate from the babies’ stuff. She could just throw it into the diaper bag and it would be one less item to try to tote.

  26. Cosmos says:

I just decided I needed a wristlet, and was going to try to make one on my own. Now there’s no need since you have a pattern! You’ve done all the trial and error and I’m looking forward to making one.

    Kris

  53. Marie says:

Great pattern, I too carry a ‘suitcase’ and it seems the larger the purse the more stuff I put it in then it becomes so heavy. I’d like a small purse for quick errands or for quilt shop hops. Thanks for the chance to win.

I gave up a big purse long ago, but am always on the hunt for something small and practical. This looks like a wonderful solution!

I had no idea that I needed one of these until I saw them!! And I love how you cut the fabric to show the whole design. Would love to win this. Thanks for the opportunity.

What a great purse. Just the right size for a quick trip to the mall. Have a great time at Market.

Wow! I love it! I know I carry way too much in my purse! This would be just the cat’s meow!! LOL! Thanks for the chance to win the pattern!

I love this cute little purse. I would love to make it and thanks for a chance to win a copy of the pattern.

This is exactly the type of thing I have been looking for. It’s perfect. I have a big messenger bag I take for school. Having all the “necessary” stuff in one easy to grab place in it would be great.

  143. What a handy clutch! I like the credit card pockets inside. Can’t wait to see the book and try making one for myself!

this looks like the perfect size. I downsized the purse mentality several years ago. Went to just carrying a billfold but don’t like to carry my cell phone in my pocket and daughters grumble that I am usually cell phoneless when they need me. These hips don’t need any more help in the bump department. Perfect solution! very cute!

Love this pattern. I love the idea of carrying this inside of a larger bag. The other option of constantly switching items between two bags scares me – I know I’d forget things :)!

    Hi Heather,
Haven’t heard anything from you in a while and I miss reading your blogs. Love the sweater. I love the dual craft thing.

Haven’t seen any updates on the blog lately, hope all is well and you are just taking a much deserved break.

  148. Nancy says:

I really want a chance at your clutch bag for over the shoulder.

  149. Vickie says:

Don’t remember if I posted something or not … I love this pattern. Bags are so fun to create, carry and change the colors of an outfit. Way cute!

Hi, is the “Classic Clutch Purse” available via .pdf? I would be more than happy to pay for it.
    Thanks so much.
