Arrival

Just thought I’d pop in quick and let you know that “At Home for the Holidays” is now arriving in stores!

I’ve been busy unpacking the fabric, cutting fat quarters, and putting together some kits.  We always seem to have a few people who can’t find it at their local shop or find the kit they want at an on-line shop.   If that is the case, you can click here to see our kits.

I’ve put together a little collage of what I’ve been making with the fabric, though many of you who are regular readers have seen them already.

As is tradition at my blog, any time I have a new product come out, I always give away the first copy or fat quarter pack.  So, for anyone interested in having one of those fat quarter packs shown above, just leave me a comment to let me know you want to be entered into the drawing.  I’ll post the winner next week.

Many of you had lots of questions about the kitchen tile in my last post. (BTW – the color of the tiles is actually lighter than how it looks in this picture)

I thought ceramic tile was supposed to last forever.  Not so in our kitchen.  The tile in our basement, that is installed over a concrete floor, is doing fine, but the tile that we had upstairs in our kitchen had just enough movement to cause problems.  We had several tiles that cracked and problems with our grout cracking.  We have patched in new tiles and grout on several occasions, but the tiles still seemed to crack and the new grout never matched the old grout.  Sounds like many of you have experienced similar problems.  This isn’t a problem associated with just 35-year-old houses (like ours)  –  I have a family member that has been having similar issues in a brand new house.

I guess some houses just aren’t cut out for ceramic, so wee ended up taking out all the ceramic tile in our kitchen.  We used a hammer drill to take up all the old grout, mortar, and tiles.  A bit messy, but with the smaller size of our kitchen, it only took a few hours.  Then a new 1/4″ subfloor was installed in preparation for the new tile.  We used a staple gun with special staples  to secured the floor, rather than having to screw it down every 3″ like you have to do under ceramic.

Next, we started laying out the new tile and cutting out the pieces.  I was totally surprised at how fast this step went.  The new tile cuts like butter!  We used a tile saw, but without water.  The tile is secured with glue, not the mortar typically used with ceramic tiles.  This glue dries really fast and we were able to walk on it quite quickly.  We ended up getting the entire floor laid and grouted in under 7 hours.  When we laid the ceramic, it took two days!

The grout is not supposed to stain or crack.  Let’s just say I’ll believe it when I see it!  For now, everything looks good, but time will tell.

The brand of tile we used is called:  Adura Luxury Floors by Mannington – Color:  Corsica

Grout:  Adura Luxury Grout  – Color:  Chamois

Cost:  About $1300 for materials, covering about 200 square feet (or about $900 more than we spent on the ceramic, so it’s not cheap)

Here’s a close up of the tile, so you can see the texture.

Has anyone else used this tile?  I’m interested in any feedback any of you might have on this.

Surely you jest. *S* Is anyone interested in winning some fabric?

Now I can only hope that an early number will show up as a winner.

I’m really glad I’m way out of owning a home; I remember all that stuff, most of it not fondly.

    • Liz says:

Please include my name in the drawing for the fat quarters!

We put down a Mannington floor product similar to what you are describing in 2006. We love it and have had no problems with it.

      Absolutely love your great photography!

  9. Mary-Kay says:

I really like the look of that tile. We have exactly the same porblems with our kitchen floor. I had a line on some hardwood taken out of a house that was the same as the existing hardwood in our house but it fell through. And there is no way that I’m ever going to put ceramic back in the kitchen. I’ll have to remember the brand of tile for when the time comes to re-do the kitchen. And I can’t wait to see your fabric line up close. I love it already!

  10. Dawn says:

Love the new fabrics! And no, I have not seen that kind of tile before.

  11. DianeY says:

That bundle of fabric looks so pretty sitting there-I think I’d have to wait awhile to even want to unopen it!
Hope your flooring works out well this time. Most of the tile we have is on concrete slab, so we’ve never had a problem.

  42. Cathy Burk says:

Your new fabric is so beautiful! So is your new floor…I hope it holds up for you. I can’t believe you did all that work in such a short amount of time. You are really professional re-modelers!

  43. Gene Black says:

Definitely interested in winning the FQ bundle! Your fabric lines are always delightful.

The tile is interesting to look at. I can’t be sure from the picture but it looks like it has lots of actual texture. I would *think* that would make it harder to keep clean especially if you have pets or children in the house. (and that includes visiting nieces/nephews and “grown” children who don’t always wipe their feet. )

  44. What great fabric….already got lots of ideas for what I could do with the fabric……….

  45. Ummm,… of COURSE I WANT TO BE ENTERED!!! I have yet to make anything for the holidays, so please do enter me. 🙂 Lovely.

  46. Christina says:

Of course I want a FQ bundle! 🙂

  47. audrey says:

Please include me in the giveaway! The fabric is gorgeous! Makes me want to start planning for the holidays 🙂

    Have a nice weekend!

  53. Thanks for having another giveaway! I love the Christmas fabric!

We just finished our kitchen remodel a couple of months ago. I wanted ceramic tile, but our contractor strongly advised us not to get it. He explained our house was too old and will settle and shift more in the coming years. I ended up buying linoleum that looks very similar to the tile you just laid. It saved us quite a bit of money and lit looks wonderful! Good luck with yours.

  54. Barbara says:

The Christmas fabric is fun! Now I have an excuse to go fabric shopping.

  55. Claudia says:

Love the new fabric line. I like that it can be left out past the holidays or all year. As always keep up the great work.

  75. Amy says:

Of course I’m interested in winning some fabric!! Very cute line – I like how it is Christmas without screaming Christmas. And the black and white just really jazzes it up. Love the pictures of your kitchen as well.

  76. Robin L says:

I would love to win a stack of those FQs!!

oh and here’s the most likely reason why your old tile and grout most likely cracked over time..if they were installed over plywood or any other subflooring other than cement, they will almost always crack over time!! You can still install over plywood or laminate, but you should have a “mud floor” installed before your tile. It’s basically a 1-1.5″ layer of special cement that prevents any “give” to your tile floor. We just had this done in our kitchen and I have a few March blog entries regarding it. Good luck with your new floor!

  77. Christine Cole says:

I would love to win this fabric bundle. I usually stay away from holiday fabric lines because they seem so over the top (gaudy) Christmas. This line is so crisp and fresh and contemporary- I love it. I love that so many of the prints can be used for other projects, not just Christmas. You have definitely done it again- great job!

  78. Jean says:

Love the fabric. Would be prefect in our daughter and her families house. Yes, please enter me in the drawing.

I too will never have ceramic tile in my house again. It’s the worst buy we have made. So will look into your new tile and think about it. Thanks for the chance at your new line of fabric.

  79. AnnieO says:

After all those beautiful projects you showed? Of COURSE I’m thrilled at a chance to win a stack of your gorgeous new line. Very clever of you to make the line both holiday and “regular” 🙂

Fingers crossed for you on the new tile and grout. It looks great and hope it stays that way.

  80. Penny says:

Your Christmas fabric line has a great updated look! I really like the table toppers that you have created and am anxious to find the pattern and fabric.

Good luck with your new floor. It sounds like a lot of work but will be well worth it if the new floor is durable and continues to maintain its look.

  81. Kathy Jones says:

I really like the brights in your collection. Pick me to win, please. Thank you!

  82. Kathleen says:

Just LOVE your new fabric…. can’t wait until it’s available.

  84. Michelle Rodriguez says:

The fabric is awesome! Hope I win!

  85. Alicia says:

Love the tile–hope it works out well for you guys!

  86. Elizabeth E. says:

First the floor. In our entry way and bathroom downstairs, we have ceramic on the concrete subfloor: no problem. We decided for an engineered wood floor (that can be refinished 3 times) for the kitchen.

Upstairs we laid the ceramic in both bathrooms: huge problems–the same as you in both the cracking of the tiles and the granite. People who have come in to give us an estimate reassure us that by laying down a new subfloor it Will All Be Fixed. I’ve gotten bids for new floors in both the engineered wood from downstairs and new ceramic and have been going back and forth, trying to decide. THANK YOU! for your posting about this. I’m going to go with the wood as I think it will “give and take” more with our 33 year-old-house, with its slightly hilly floors and creakiness. Reading about your experiences has really helped.

Secondly–yes yes yes. Please enter me in the drawing for your wonderful new fabric line. I say this, knowing that the Random Generator has a bias against me (I never win on these things), but hey, hope springs eternal.

    Again–thanks for the floor info.

  87. karen E S says:

Just lovely colors…so fresh and contemporary. I’d love to win,.

  88. Elizabeth E. says:

Oops–errata–“cracking of the tiles and the granite” should be “cracking of the tiles and the grouting.”

  89. Marilyn Smith says:

Such beautiful fabric! Toss my name ion the hat! Your tile looks just awesome. I hope this solves your previous problems. Our whole house is tiled, and the patio. We did it all ourselves – what a job. But, we do enjoy a tile floor here in the desert.

  90. Barb Colvin says:

Oh yes, please! At Home for the Holidays is beautiful. You can send some my way 😉
The new tile is beautiful, but way more expensive than anything I have worked with. Hope it holds up for you guys.

  91. Oh I love, love this material pack. Please put me in for the drawing. Hope I’m a winner.
Don’t you just hate problems after a job is done. Hope this new tile works out.

  92. Sharon Dimberg says:

Love love love your new fabrics and the patterns. I would love to have it for myself, however, if I am lucky enough to win I would give it to my daughter. Natalie is 23 yrs old, just finished her first year teaching orchestra and loves to quilt. So I have been giving her fabrics to use for her quilts. Natalie loves your patterns and has made several of the table runners for college friends who have gotten married. Now her high school friends are getting married and she makes wedding quilts for them. Keeping my fingers crossed I win the fabric for my daughter.

  127. Deb C says:

I am nuts about your new fabrics! I would make one of everything you have shown. Love the patterns you chose. As far as the tiles go, I totally get it. I had porcelain kitchen tiles put in 2 yrs ago, and the grout is crumbling in areas, and things dropped made hairline cracks in a few places even tho the installer told us something could fall from the roof and not crack a tile. HA!
It’s nice that you have a handy hubby. Sounds like you have a nice plan thought out. Good luck.

  128. Darlene B says:

I would love to win some of your new fabric! Your new floor looks fantastic! Home improvement projects never seem to end….ours lately all seem to have to do with plumbing issues – not as exciting as a new kitchen floor!

  219. so glad to know i’m not the only one with kitchen floor problems!! i did my kitchen floor about two years ago while my husband was out of town on business! (with the help of my father-in-law) by the next summer the grout was craking and you could hear the tiles creak when you walked on it. i was sure it was due to the fact that i was not a pro tile installer and had done something wrong! we have been taking up tile and scraping off the mortor in sections and using some type of mortor that has a bit of give to it….not cheap! and not a fun job!

anyhoo….enough of my rambling!! love the fabric and would love to be signed up for the give-a-way!

I have used that tile. I used it as the border around my booth in Houston. It will NEVER, EVER, EVER come up unless you use a heat gun and some “Goo Be Gone”. I loved the look of this product and thought it was very nice for non-ceramic. I drop a lot of things so I am afraid I would drop a knife and that would be a problem. I think new kitchen floor looks beautiful and richer than the ceramic. There’s my 2 cents worth!

Fabric is beautiful and has a crisp look to it that I love. Way to go!
