Welcome to Day 1 of the Henry Glass Project Parade!
Today, I am one of the featured designers.
In case we haven’t met before, let’s start with introductions.
My name is Heather. My husband, Joel and I live in Minnesota.
with our dog Daisy.
You can read a little more about us and our business here. I started my business 15 years ago and have since published lots of books and single patterns, along withdesigning fabric lines for Henry Glass. My goal as a designer is to always be on the look out for new trends in design and color, while striving to bring you stylish and fresh patterns. I understand that quilters are busy people, so I love to use simple tricks and techniques to make things come together easily and quickly. There is always something in the works around here, so I thought I’d share a few of the things that I have been up to lately.
Up on the design wall in my studio is a project using my next fabric line, called Artful Home. The fabric isn’t here yet, so I am just experimenting a little with my strike-offs. The line is currently out on the road with HG’s sales reps and will be in stores early next year.

Also in the works is my next Christmas line, called Deck the Halls. It’s a combination of my favorite colors and prints — both trendy and traditional, some Christmas-sy and some not, some large scale home-dec type prints, and some smaller quilty-type prints. Would you like to see a sneak peek at a few of my favorite pieces?
Again, it will be available 2011, but I couldn’t help but share a little teaser! I hope you all will like it.
Now, onto my project ~
I decided to share a pattern for a dish passer. It’s quick and easy, takes very little fabric, and makes for a great gift. The whole idea is to have a stylish, yet practical way to pass around those hot dishes around the table, without having to send the potholders around with the dish.
It’s made from a simple rectangle, with ties added on the four corners. It is reversible, so pick out two fat quarters that you want to show off!
The little ties pull the corners together, so that the dish passer will hug the sides of a 9″x13″ pan.
(BTW – this stripe is printed on the bias, giving it that cute candy cane effect. To learn how to make any stripe have that effect, click here)

Our theme for today is a favorite Christmas decoration or ornament. When I found out that this was going to be our topic today, I knew right away what I was going to share. During this blog hop, I have already talked about my Aunt Lynn a few times, but today I am going to make her ears burn! Back when I was really little, she started giving each of her nieces and nephews a Christmas ornament each year. Here’s a picture of one of the early ones – it’s one of my favorites.

In fact, they are all favorites.
They are all so pretty and have special meaning to me. I love unpacking them every year and looking at each one. When I had my first Christmas after moving out of my parent’s house, these were the only Christmas decorations I had!
My very favorites are the ones that she hand painted or designed – like the ones below:
As a little girl, I was just fascinated that she could paint these herself.
Each one was dated and signed with her special signature and “xxoo”. To this day, I have to still remind myself to call her “my Aunt Lynn”, when in my thoughts she is still Auntie Lynn.
There are many more in my collection from “Auntie”, but I don’t want to make this post too long by showing them all! I just wanted to tell you about how thoughtful and caring my Aunt is. She is also the one that gave each of us a key chain on our 16th birthday, a collection of photos that she had taken of us over the years for our 18th birthday, and she even remembers to send a card for everyone’s birthdays and anniversaries. I can’t really express in words what all of those things have meant to me over the years, but someday I would love to be able to give her something back that would mean as much to her.

Thanks for the dish passer – that is on my ever expanding to do list! I have a lot of the same ball ornaments that you have. My nana gave me an ornament every year starting in 1977 – it is such a great idea because when I moved out of the house I already had so many ornaments!

My Aunt Jane had the same tradition of giving me an ornament ever year. Both my grandma and my aunt always gave us one on Thanksgiving, so we’d be ready to decorate the tree. I still have all those ornaments and remember the years she gave them to me. It brings back special memories.

Beautiful pictures and ornaments. We give each of our kids and grandson a dated ornament each year to create memories and to remember Christmas’ past. It’s also great when they grow up and already have a collection to decorate their own tree.

I love the dish passer. It’s great because it is washable. I have baskets for some dishes, but if someone spills on them, they are a pain to get clean!

I too had an aunt who gave me a Christmas ornament every Christmas. I love that my tree looks so homey with all of the homemade ornaments that my aunt gave me. I think older ornaments have so much more sentimental value then the color coded theme ornaments that you can by nowadays!

loved the story about your ornaments … I have been giving my daughter one every year since she was born and in her early years other family members also gave her an ornament each year .. at 16 years old she has her own box now and can practically decorate her own tree! It is such fun every year to get them out and remember those who gave her ornaments … they are so familiar and much treasured and I hope she will continue to cherish them as she grows!

My Grandmother would give us each an ornament each Christmas. I treasure them, as you do! After my grandmother passed away I decided to start giving my children a christmas ornament each year. They open it Christmas Eve. The first year I also gave them a rubbermaid or sterlite ornament keeper. I have tried to find ornaments from all over the world. I don’t spend much and they aren’t fancy, but just try to find something they will treasure. My oldest is turning 20 this month and has acquired many from me, but also from friends in HS and college. Heather, are you sure its been 15 years? I have some of your very earliest books and I still love them. And those ornaments – cute. I bought the 1978 “Betsy” ornament for my daughter.
I love Christmas ornaments for years the day after Thanksgiving my mother-in-law,sister-in-law and I would go to a town-wide craft fair and buy a new ornaments for our trees. Every year when i decorate the tree I think of my dear MIL who has passed away. Your new fabric looks delicious!

I loved your post, especially about the ornaments. I gave each of my kids an ornament every year and when my oldest son got married I packaged them up and gave them to him for his first tree in his home. Lovely tradition!! Thanks for the pattern!! Merry Christmas!!

Question on the dish passer — I assume at some point the batting will need to be trimmed. Is there much shifting when the X is quilted? Typically for my quilts the backing and batting are cut bigger than the top. Do I need to follow suit with this project? Would it work to cut the backing, batting, and top to the same size?

Love your story about your Aunt Lynn’s ornaments. Some of my mom’s favorites are the ones we kids painted for her, and just last night we had a painting party with my 2 children to paint up bunches of ornaments for family gifts. Fun with a 6 and 2 year old! Thx for sharing, and for such a nice giveaway.

My Grandmother and I used to make new ornaments every year. It is a traditional that I’ve carried on with my children. We also purchase new ornaments. It used to be the Snoopy ornaments that came with the tree box filled with chocolates. Since they don’t make those anymore we just find something fun each year.
I love the dish passer. I have never used one, but I’m excited to make this one and give it a try. Your new fabric lines are beautiful and I can’t wait for them to be available! Thanks so much for the pattern.

thanks for sharing your ornament memories. I have a large collection of special ornaments waiting to be added to my tree and the ones I collected for my children over the years are slowly but surely moving on to their own homes.

What a wonderful story! Those ornaments must mean the world to you! I almost started crying. My nieces and nephews call me Aunt Tetters, so I sign things to them with that, I hope someday those things will mean as much to them as your ornaments do….
