I have been a very bad blogger lately. It’s less than two weeks until quilt market, so I’ve been busy trying to get everything finished in time. That means unnecessary things like cleaning, cooking, sleeping and blogging don’t get done! I wanted to take a time out today to start showing you a few things from the new book.
Here’s the cover ~
Yes, it’s a follow-up to our popular book “Living Large.” I have made every quilt in that book 3 or 4 times. I am still collecting large-scale prints, so I decided I needed a little variety and should design a new collection of quilts for large-scale prints. As you may have heard me mention before, large-scale fabrics require a special pattern – one that doesn’t cut the fabric up into tiny pieces, but shows off the fabric!
My favorite quilt always makes the cover. Here’s a better shot at that cover quilt, called “Spaghetti Junction:
I had a hard time picking a favorite, as this quilt was also in the running:
This pattern is called Hip to {NOT} Be Square. These fabrics are so fun – they are from the Summertime collection by Barbara Jones (Henry Glass and Co). This picture shows a close-up of the yummy fabrics and the machine quilting. (My husband pointed out that it looks like I am using stolen library books as a prop. They are actually bought and paid for. As a kid the summer library sale was always one of my favorite days of the year. I got to fill my wagon with all the books I wanted for only 10 cents each.)
The next quilt up is Simple Gifts – a simple quilt that can be whipped up in just a few hours.
I had so much fun machine quilting this one. The design in the cream blocks was one that I hadn’t tried before, so it’s always fun to try something new.
The fabric is so happy – it’s called “Hoot” by Momo (Moda)
The next design is called Patchwork Posies.
I made this quilt last fall. After quilting it, I took it outside to photograph it and this beautiful tree helped me out. I think this tree and quilt were made for each other! I ended up not using this photo in the book, because if you look closely the binding isn’t on. By the time I got the binding done, the tree had lots all it’s leaves.
But these colors . . . . .
The fabric is Bloom and Grow by Riley Blake.
I am going to save the rest of the quilts for another day, before this post gets too long. There are 9 designs in the book and a total of 24 size options to choose from. The book will retail for $16 and should be appearing in stores next week. As is tradition on my blog, I always give away the first copy of the new book, so leave a comment to be entered to win. I’ll post the rest of the quilts next week and give you a second chance to enter for another copy of the book. click here to see the rest of the quilts)Please note this drawing is now closed. 5-9-11
Ooh – I really like Simple Gifts… of course, it may just be the Momo fabric! 😉 They all look great!
Wow! The quilts in your book are so gorgeous. I can’t wait to buy me a copy, unless I win one. Then I’d buy a copy for my friend.
They are all beautiful but Simple Gifts is my favourite! I would love to make that one – I will be keeping an eye out at my LQS for your book. Unless I win a copy first!
Simple Gifts or Patchwork Posies look like something I could try for my first bed-sized quilt. All are beautiful!
Beautiful quilts!! I used one of your books for my grandson’s first quilt and I still love it.
Do you mind a question? On the quilt where you tried the new design on the cream fabrics – how do you stop and start and keep the stitching looking so nice on a pattern so like Baptist Fan?
Hi Mary – I did all the stitching in each cream block without starting and stopping. I started in the center of the fan, and “echoed” my way out, using my foot as a guide so each consecutive fan was slightly bigger than the last. After four (or so), I would start a new one and continue until all the space was filled. I practiced on paper first to get the hang of it!
Once again, Amazing!!! You are so very talented. Thanks for all the wonderful photos.
I love the quilts you posted and can’t wait to see the rest. I think my favorite was the one on the tree – Patchwork Posies? Love them all.
I love, love the quilts!! I’ll be sure to buy the book!
another beautiful group of quilts!
Beautiful creations! Reminds me of Spring and sunshine that we are still waiting for. Thank you for sharing!
I already see two quilts I want to make. Great to have some pattens for all those beautiful large scale prints.
I see two quilt pattens I would like to make. Great to have some ideas for all those beautiful large-scale prints.
I love these quilts – and see one that I just may need to make:) Very, very pretty!
Kris
Another great book! Love the fabrics you use…even tho my house is more Civil War era. Not kidding…the land was homestead in 1865…and the dining room is log cabin we exposed…probably soon after that date.
Love these designs, Heather! I’m looking forward to the book’s availability — and of course I’d love to win a copy 😉
Love these colors! It’s hard to pick a favorite but I think my first fav would be Spaghetti Junction or Hip to (Not) Be Square. It’s hard to cut up some fabrics with great large scale designs so this book will be one to have. Thanks for the blog – missed you.
Lovely quilts. I love the Hip to {Not} Be Square and Simple Gifts.
Can’t wait for your new book to hit the shops. LOVE the quilts!!!
I am such a fan of your blog & all that you create! I saw this book in the “coming soon” section of fatquartershop – I thought maybe I missed the preview on your blog, so I’m excited to see your creations. I love to quilt, but lately I’ve found the one thing I struggle with is fabric seletion… Any advice?
Thank you for the chance to win!!!!
Hi Jen,
I think the best advice that I can give you one this is to work from within one line of fabric. That is what I do about 99% of the time. That way you know all the fabrics go together. The other thing I so is select the fabric from the line with the strongest value and use that as my contrast fabric. Often times that is the brown, black, red, or the darkest color in the line. That contrast helps all the other colors “sparkle”!
Your new designs are WONDERFUL! Can hardly wait to purchase your new book. I have some large print fabrics that I’ve been hoarding. Time to put them to use.
I love all your patterns and I would love to win your new book.
I love the pattern on the cover + the others you showed too! I also appreciated being able to see the quilting.
Those quilts are beautiful!
I have so many large scale prints waiting to be cut into an appropriate setting-I think this may be just the answer I’m looking for! I really love spaghetti junction and the rest are beautiful as well!
I love your books. I am taking 1 book and 1 pattern with 2 of your fabric lines away with me to Indiana next week for a quilting retreat. I’m hoping to assemble both quilts! I would love the new book as I find your patterns so easy to read and follow.
Peggy
It is always such an inspiration to see your wonderful quilts, thanks so much.
Oooh! How exciting! I love all the patterns. Thanks for the chance!
WOW I loved every quilt displayed. Please throw me into the pot. Fingers crossed.
Next time you need a quick binding …. sew it onto the front as usual …. then use Elmer’s Washable School glue for the backing …. no one will ever know in the photograph.

Your book looks great and has me thinking more about using large prints. As always I adore your quilting. Good luck at market!
I love your quilts and your books, thanks for the chance to win one.
Hi Heather, As usual your quilts look awesome as does your photography. I don’t think anyone would have notice the beautiful quilt in front of the tree with the beautiful yellow fall leaves. Very nice!
blah! I should reread a note before I hit send. What I meant to say was I don’t think anyone would have notice the binding missing on the beautiful quilt that you had in front of the tree with the beautiful yellow fall leaves! There, I think that is better!!!!!
Every book of yours that I have I have loved! This one would be no exception, and i would love to win it! All your quilts are absolutely beautiful!
Gorgeous new quilt designs!! Each one is pretty. Not sure which one I’ll want to make first?? Big decisions! 🙂 I love the library book sale story because I used to buy tons of books in elementary school at the 10 cent sale! Lol! Still have many of them. I just bought them because I love books. Not sure I have even read most of them!
I love that in Spaghetti Junction you used many different prints from different line & designers. Thanks for the chance!
I love everyone of the quilts. Congratulations on another beautiful book. Thank you for the chance to win one.
I love your new book, thanks for the chance to win one. Love the picture of the quilt on the tree branch–didn’t notice there wasn’t binding untill you mentioned it.

Sandy E-H
I love the new book. I have almost all your books on my “wishlist” (the others I already have). I am thinking of taking all my Granny’s old aprons and making a quilt so this book would be perfect. Have fun at Market.
Love, Love Love that quilt on the tree (and wish you could have used it in the book anyway). I just found your blog 2 weeks ago and have been having fun going through the archives. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of the book!

I really like simple gifts but the others are so interesting also. You continue to amaze me! When will your book hit the stores?
Wow. I love so many of those quilts. At first I was sure my favorite was Spaghetti Junction although when I first saw that I didn’t know the name. But, now I see more from your book and I LOVE Hip to (NOT) Be Square. Awesome quilt. They are all awesome in all honesty, but that’s definitely my favorite.

Ooh – I love the Hip to NOT be square quilt! Love the fabrics you used as well!
What an interesting set of designs, very graphic . Not what I expected when I saw the theme “using large sale prints”. They seem like they’d be layer cake friendly too. I will have to look for this one — well, if I am not lucky enough to win it that is!
Love the quilts and the way you showcase the big prints. I would love the book because I love big prints but never am sure what to do with them. Sandra
Love the quilts and the fabrics. Impressive how beautiful quilts can be made with relatively simple patterns. Thanks for sharing!

This is another great hit, Heather!! I can see some other possibilities in Hip to NOT be Square – by changing some color placements, and using some photo transfer, you could shadow some photos here and there. I love each one, I’ll get it for sure, if I don’t win. We have a shop hop next week, I hope it comes in!!
Very nice looking book! I love the fabrics and the quilts are so cute – count me in! I’d love to play with this!

As always, after reading your blog I come away so motivated and inspired! I just wish I was equally inspired to do some house keeping… 🙂
Because the Random Number Generator hates hates hates me, I am reluctantly trying one more time. But even if I don’t win, I think so many of the quilts deserve to be made up so I’ll be buying that book. Thanks for writing it! Congratulations for getting it to print and good luck at Quilt Market in SLC, my husband’s hometown. Head to Tony Caputo’s deli (downtown) for a great sandwich. I also like Cafe Trio for a yummy restaurant outing, and the bakery (Tulie Bakery) just around the corner will have you donating your hard-earned cash to them. For quick eats, try Paradise Bakery (3 locations). Okay, that’s all. (Hope the Random Number Generator doesn’t hate me so much now.)
I have a very large collection of large scale prints that would be great made into these patterns. I have a lot of ‘I spy’ fabrics on dark backgrounds that would be wonderful in either of the first two quilts with bright sashing. I can’t wait to try them.
Your designs are always fresh and new! Just love your color combinations!
The quilts all look fabulous. Would love to win your new book … fingers crossed.

Beautiful quilts! I would love to win a copy of this book. Thanks for the chance to win.
Oh my goodness… I think you made this book just for me. I only make quilts that are square in pattern. Much to the dismay of my husband (…Another square quilt, he says?) If I’m not the lucky winner, I’ll be first in line to buy it!!
Love the quilts and love the colors.
Beautiful quilts with such lovely colors. The pictures look wonderful of the quilts taken outside in the sunshine. The book with be great to add to my collection. Thanks,
Karen M
Heather, I love the new book. I have been looking for patterns for large scale prints for a graduation gift for a guy next year. This may just be what I have been looking for.
By the way, I made the small Bella bag and love it. It is just the right size. It carries the necessities without becoming too heavy. I often find myself carrying it by the grommets. I put my initial on between the grommets with my embroidery machine. It was part of my “show and tell” at a recent quilt retreat since my big project was not yet transportable. Jean R
The quilts you showed from your book are fantastic! I have plenty of those large prints that I’m hesitant to cut up. This book could really help me out. Thanks for the chance to win!
Love the new patterns, you use such lovely fabrics to showcase them ….great photography to see all the detailed stitching. Will have to order the book if I don’t win because it will help use up some of the many piles of large scale fabric I’ver been collecting.
Your new patterns are so “modern”. Just love them. I’d sure love to win the new book.
Your quilts are so happy and colorful! My favorite is the The Simple Gifts quilt. The appliqued birds add a nice touch.
I don’t like to see all the quilts in a book before I buy it. It’s such a surprise to turn the page and see another neat design. But I couldn’t seem to stop myself while looking at your pictures. I like “Spaghetti Junction” (is that a MN reference?) a lot, but my favorite is ” Hip to {Not} Be Square.” Or is it “Patchwork Posies”? Now I’m not sure. They all look terrific.
I absolutely love the first three quilts you showed from your new book. Can’t wait to see the rest of them!

Yet another fabulous book. Can’t wait to get my hands on it!!

Love the new patterns that you’ve showed and I can’t wait to see the rest of them. If it weren’t for your books/patterns I would have NO CLUE what to do with the large prints except cut them up into little pieces! :S
The quilts are stunning! I love them all! Would love to win the book, but I’ll buy it if I don’t win it!
Love the quilts, can’t wait to get the book!!!!

Spaghetti Junction is my favorite. The colors are beautiful and it has so much motion in it. I’ve admired large print fabrics in the store but never knew what to do with them. NOW I DO!!! Love your close up shots so that we can see your beautiful quilting!
