Spanish Tiles

I’m just popping in quick to show you a quilt that I finished.  It’s called Spanish Tiles and can be found in my “Living Large 2” book.

This is a more modern color pallet than I usually use, but I wanted to make a quilt with a gray background.  I set out to find a color combination that would work with gray.

I based my color story on this fat quarter.  It’s from the Kumari Garden by Dena Designs.

The print directly above and below this print in the quilt are also from that collection.  There are some other really cute prints in that line, and now I’m tempted to get it in the pink colorway.  Most of the other prints are from my stash.  I happened to have a really old fat quarter pack of Ivy Trellis by Riley Blake Designs (I left out the oranges) that went pretty well with the Kumari Garden.

I had over half of the Ivy Trellis fat quarter pack left, so I used it to make my backing.

I tried out a new quilting design on this quilt.  I have seen it before, but never tried it myself.  As I was working on it, I hated it.  It felt really messy and uneven and I was worried that I had ruined my quilt.  When I took the quilt off the machine and laid it out, I breathed a huge sigh of relief to see it wasn’t as bad as I thought.  In fact, it’s really growing on me and I’m happy to have found a new design to mix in with my other quilting designs.

I love a good finish!  I was happy to see that the Kumari Garden line had a nice stripe for the binding.

This is my third time making this quilt, so in case you missed the first two, here is how they turned out:

You can see more of both of them here.  If you are following along with Maria on her way through “Living Large 2”, you can see her color option here.

I’m off to finish a couple more things before heading into the weekend, so I bet scoot.  Take care and talk to you all next week . . . .

Heather, your quilts are always fantastic! I have your Living Large 2 book and when I finish “Simple Gifts” I am going to make the Spanish Tiles quilt next. You have so many great patterns, it’s hard to pick just one at a time! I am thinking about using Amy Butler’s Soul Blossoms fabric line.

  5. Ginger says:

Wow, this quilt is very striking in the grey colorway! The white really sets off the “tiles”.

Ohhh, lovely. The grey was wonderful in your guilts. Fun seeing a pattern in several colorways. I haven’t knitted in years and am so impressed with your sweaters. I loved the shrug and it looked great from the back, too.

That gray quilt looks fantastic. Gray seems to be everywhere right now, but not everyone can figure out how best to work colors around it. Very nicely done.

Oh wow! You have just made my day. I fell in love with some Matilda fabric from Jennifer Paganelli’s West Indies line but have been at a loss as to what to do with them. This spanish tiles pattern is perfect! What a great way of showcasing fabrics you don’t have the heart to cut up. Your book is going on my wishlist. Thank you!
