Favorite Finds from Quilt Market 2015

Today I just want to share a few favorite finds from Quilt Market.

I will start with a couple of products, and then talk mostly about what I love best, fabric!

First, I wanted to mention Hobbs batting.  I generally use the Hobbs unbleached 80/20. It has been what I have used for 20 years, but I still learned something new about it.  Did you know that it comes in bleached – and more importantly black?  Just the other day I was wishing for a black cotton batting and a week later I find that my favorite batting comes in black!  I also scored one of their wool battings, which I have been wanting to try for a long time.

Another thing that I wanted to learn about at market was using a double of batting.  I had heard about machine quilters using 2 batts in a quilt and I got to feel a couple of them at market.  I will say that two battings really does show off the machine quilting, but I do not like how it feels.  It’s quite stiff and I imagine that it would be hard to sufficiently cuddle with.  If you were hanging the quilt on the wall only, and were a fabulous machine quilter, I can see why it’s done.  But for myself, I like to use the quilts and I don’t have fancy quilting to show off, therefore I will continue to do what I have been doing – 1 layer of the Hobbs 80/20 (or sometimes their Polydown).  Does anyone else have anything to add about batting?  I would love to hear what your favorite type is!

Here’s another little fun thing that I found.  Have you noticed that cross stich is making a comeback?  I did it in the 80’s and haven’t been tempted to try it since.  But look at these cute things from Red Gate Stitchery –

I think it would be great fun to make one of these bracelets, or the necklace below.  You can find them here.  I thought they were even cuter in person.

One of the books that I found was this one by Indygo Junction.  I like how they show one pattern, six different ways by changing up the sleeve, adding an accent fabric, etc.

DSC_7916

I also loved their tunic pattern.  It was also cuter in person

PIJ972-2[1]

I plan to make mine out of the aqua fabric in the photo below.  It is made by Art Gallery and is such a fun print.  The other two fabrics are the new rayons that I saw at market that I wanted to try.  These two are designed by Heather Bailey, but I also liked Cotton+Steel’s rayons.  (All three were purchased at Hawthorne Threads.  If you haven’t ordered from them before, they have a great selections of quilt fabric, knits – even rayons and denim.)

DSC_7922

The coral below is some of the double gauze that I saw at market.  It has beautiful texture, but my first impression is that it will be wrinkly.  I will let you know how my top turns out.

DSC_7898

Speaking of tops, here are two that I finished last Friday.  Both are knits from Hawthorne threads.  I will tell you more about them when I get some better photos.

And lastly, my favorite quilt fabrics from market.

I loved these shot cottons from Studio E.  Studio E is owned by the same company as Henry Glass (who I design for).   They also are much more beautiful in person.

DSC_7875

You can see the beautiful texture a little better in the photo below.  I would love to use the darker ones for some sort of block sampler quilt, with a grey background.  (Hint – If you like these fabrics too, you should read all the way to the bottom of this post)

And – my favorite part about market – Sample Spree at the Moda table.  You can have more fun there in 10 minutes than should be allowed.  And as a bonus, what you purchase in that 10 minutes can keep you having fun all year long.  How great is that?   Below are 3 of the bundles that I liked.  Listed from left to right – Canyon by Kate Spain, Hello Darling by Bonnie and Camille, and Tucker Prairie by OneCanoeTwo.

DSC_7940

My three favorite bundles are: (again listed from left to right)

Farmhouse by Fig Tree Quilts, Gooseberry by Vanessa Goertzman, and Prairie by Corey Yoder.

DSC_7934

Prairie was my favorite of all the lines.  I love the cheddar yellow – which I haven’t seen a lot of lately, but loved in this combination of colors.  It’s fresh and bright without being too bright.  I’m also a little tired of so many pastels, and this is a little darker than that.

DSC_7933

And here they are all together.  I have never in my life bought so much fabric at once, but this will keep me supplied for my work projects for the next 6 months!  Is really fun to know that the perfect fabric is waiting for me in the studio, whenever I have time to sew or a new idea comes to me.

If you would like to share in a little of the fun, I am giving away a fat quarter pack of those beautiful shot cottons – courtesy of Studio E.  If you would like to be entered to win, just leave a comment in the comment section.

  11. Elaine Morgan says:

Love those colors! Would sure like to win the bundle! About the batting – I love the wool batting and have been using it for a long time. I have my quilts done by my “long-armed” friend – and the quilts feel like those that are 100 years old – all broken in and snuggly – right from the start! They aren’t heavy and are so warm! I strongly recommend wool batting above all others. One batting I don’t like is Warm and Natural – it’s way too stiff. It’s wonderful for wall hangings (because it’s so stiff) – but not on the bed!

  12. mary jo says:

What gorgeous fabric you collected. I also love Hobbs 80/20 but my favorite is the wool. It’s wonderful for hand or machine quilting and soft and warm. Very cuddled! Thanks for the chance to win.

  13. Virginia Alexander says:

I love the colors of the packets!! Can’t wait to start on a quilt!!
Yes!! Please enter me in winning a “bunch” of them!!

I am so glad you mentioned the Hobbs 80/20 in black! I have a wall hanging I need black for, and I always have used Hobbs. Hopefully I can find it online at Hawthorne. 🙂 Lovely choices of fabrics. The shot cotton looks beautiful in your picture. Who knew? Thanks for the chance to win.

  15. Fun to see all your apparel sewing… I have been tempted to making something with AMHorner’s new wovens. Thanks for the chance!

  16. Shelly H says:

Love the texture and all the beautiful colors of the shot cottons.

  17. I’ve used two layers of batt, but it was one layer of cotton and a split layer of hobbs wool batting that you keep on top that gives you a little lift. I can’t wait to hear about the shirts – they look great – I have not sewn clothes for myself but it looks intriguing.

  18. Lynda says:

BEAUTIFUL! The colors are so refreshing. Love the shot cottons! Thanks for the great “eye candy”.

  38. boluh says:

Pretty bundle and I would love to win it, and thank you for such a generous give away. I also think “Prairie” by Corey Yoder is a gorgeous line of fabric, and it is on my wish list.

  39. Jane kwarciany says:

I too have started leaning towards the bright colors! Until recently most of my quilts are shades of beige, green and reds!

  40. Debby McRae says:

  60. Sharlene says:

These fabrics make me want to sew apparel!

  61. Myra says:

Regarding batting, I have used wool in two custom quilts, and it is really an amazing batting. It ends up fuller than cotton, yet still really soft and drapey. I washed both of the quilts before sending them off, and they washed superbly. I used Quilter’s Dream Wool, as well as Hobbs Wool. Wool also has the benefit of warmth in the winter and cooler in the summer, which might be a good thing where you live with cold winters and warm summers. I plan to use it for all bed quilts I make for my family in the future. I’m glad you discovered it, and I suspect you’ll like it.

  62. Mary Ann says:

Such fun new fabrics! I just might have a couple on pre order…lol. I have always used Quilters Dream. With a 20 yr recommendation I will give Hobbs a try! Thanks for the opportunity to win these beautiful Shot Cotton, such a lovely add in any palette.

  79. Theresa Woodruff says:

Love all your fabric bundles! It’s always hard for me to break up pretty fabric bundles like those. ☺ I can’t wait to see what you do with them. And I’m with you on the batting-I’m almost exclusively a one layer 80/20 Hobbs girl too, but I don’t do any heirloom-type quilting. Thanks for sharing!

  80. Debra says:

I have used two layers of batting…warm and natural with quilters dream wool. It is a heavy and very warm winter quilt. I have not had much success with hobbs packaged batting. I was finding many bare spots. I switched to Quilters Dream for that reason but I do use 80/20 heirloom on the 30 yd roll for donation quilts because the organization supplies it and it does quilt up beautifully.

  81. Colleen Coffman says:

How generous of you and Studio E to share such a lovely bundle of happiness with us! What a gorgeous rainbow.

It’s all so beautiful. I love the shot cottons. Thanks for the tip about Hawthorne Threads. I’ve received their e-mails for quite some time. I’ve never ordered from them, though. 99. Linda Lee Aune says:

Would love to see your smiling presence in those tops. All the fabrics bundles are inspiring. Enjoy the sun, Heather.

  100. Vicki in MN says:

You scored some beautiful fabrics!!! It will be fun to see what you create with them. I have used a double bat twice on wall hangings only. Yes it makes the quilting really stand out but you are correct they are not a cuddly quilt at all. I used hobbs 80/20 with a wool on one, the other I used the 80/20 with a layer of 4 oz polyster, love the detail it gave so it has it uses. If you want to see my projects you can see them here http://knitbug2.blogspot.com/2015/05/spring-bloggers-quilt-festival-2015.html and http://knitbug2.blogspot.com/2015/02/a-lovely-year-of-finishes-2015-feb-goal.html

I also have some 100% cotton batting that I use for making microwave potato bags since I don’t want them to start a fire in the microwave. 🙂 The shot fabrics look soft and cuddly and I love all the colors!

  172. Margaret says:

Oh my gosh, the colors of those fabrics are so beautiful that I think it would be difficult to break apart that bundle. Regarding batting, I think my favorite is any Quilter’s Dream product, because they are so easy to use and drape so nicely. Recently, I attended a class taught by Sue Nickels, who said that she uses Hobbs, so I’ve bought a little of that to give it a try. Depending on the quilt I make and how it will be used, I will choose either 100% cotton, 80/20 blend, wool, or once in awhile, an all poly batt. I don’t care for the name brand batting sold at the big box store, as I think it is stiff.
I’m glad you had fun at Quilt Market!

Love all the fabrics you’ve picked! I’m not a expert about batting but normally I use a thin polyester batting if it’s for deco like tablerunners or pillows and a cotton batting if it’s for a ‘real’ quilt.

  270. Drue Turpin says:

Well, it looks like you had a successful Spring Market! I’m not ready for cross stitch to come back yet. I’m too busy making fun quilts. I used wool Hobbs once but didn’t like it. I always wash my quilts after the binding is on, and I completely forgot how wool shrinks. My quilt shrunk 7″ and didn’t quite cover the top of the bed like I wanted it to. Live and learn. I’m dying to use those beautiful shot cottons.

  271. Ann Wissbaum says:

I absolutely love the Prairie fat quarters you picked up. I just may have to add that to my stash as well. Thanks for the viewing and the chance to win.

  272. Kim says:

At first glance, I thought these rich in color shot cottons were wool and I wondered if you picked up wool appliqué. 😃 this spring quilt market appears to have been one of the nicer gatherings with lots of good fun and purchases. I’m glad you had a great time.

  273. Gale lavers says:

I Love the hobbs polydown for most of my quilts that are for everyday use.. I use thier 100 percent cotton for bags, tabletoppers, placemats and walhangings. Love all of your fabric bundles, especially the shot cottons. Do you know why they’re called “shot cottons”? Whatever the meaning, they’re gorgeous!

  276. Frankie says:

I’ve been wanting to try Hobbs batting. I’ve just always used Warm & Natural (or white) because that was always readily available without having to order. I noticed awhile back that Joann now has Hobbs batting on the shelf so I’m trying it out for my next quilt. I LOVE all the fabrics you chose during your shopping spree — can’t wait to see what you create with them. I think that all of those are on my list to get. And lastly, the shot cottons are just gorgeous! I’d love a chance to win a bundle and create something beautiful. Have a wonderful time sewing!

  277. Ronda says:

  300. Chuck & Shannon Slagle says:

Hi!  I always so enjoy your posts, and your patterns!  I make a lot of samples for the quilt shop i work part time at from your books.  Am anxiously awaiting your new Angles with Ease 2 book to arrive at the shop! You mentioned about battings–I really really recommend Dream Cotton Select.  It also comes in a thinner version called Request.  which is nice for summer quilts.  They also have a Dream Orient, that is just luscious, and their wool batting is GREAT.  It also shows the quilting very nicely.  They do have a blend and a poly also.  But, time after time, for my quilts, i use Dream Cotton Select!  I do some machine quilting for customers and am always amazed by the different battings.  i think if you give them a try, you will be hooked!  Your little guys are just precious.  We have two little grandsons that are soon to be 6, and soon to be 4.  Little boys are just the best.  We have learned so much about Ninjas, Avengers, and the new Legos! The fabrics you showed from market are WONDERFUL!Shannon Slagle

I like Hobbs 80/20 too. It’s a nice batting, easily available, and cheap at my local Michaels for a bargain price with a coupon. I have never tried shot cottons though — they look very appealing!

  304. Jane says:

I love using the 80/20 batting for most of my projects. Would love to try the shot cottons! You’re blog is great

  305. Pam Peterson says:

It’s great to see some garment patterns being shared by quilt designers like you! I sewed nothing but garments for a couple decades, have been purising pattern books lately, but would like to find a good place to buy nice quality fabric. I’ll take a look at the site you mentioned.
